Trump is not a conservative nor is he a 'Republican'. He identified as such purely for image.

You've seen similar ad campaigns in every media. "Tastes good. Less filling." (What beer that used that motto? Miller Lite?)  When that campaign started or ended, did it signify anything other than a new ad campaign? No, same oid same old.

Trump made his run while Obama was in office and losing poll numbers, so Trump ran against the Democratic incumbency as a 'Republican'. A further positive indication for that was the Republican Primary field was packed with 'what's their names?'. Trump had name brand recognition and a dynamic image, so he ran in the Republican primary. But, being in a garage doesn't make you a car, nor did running as a Republican make him Republican, As far as is known, Trump has no identifiable Republican principles although he is anti-regunlation, so he killed some of those. That's anarchism, not conservatism or a Republican principle.

If Trump is not a Republican (review his statements on political party self-identification and you'll see the truth- he identified 'more as a Democrat'.) and he's definitely not a conservative, has promoted no positive conservative principles, how can you believe him to be either? Because he says so?

I am a conservative, we'll leave the Republican self identification alone for now- you, yourself, confuse Trumpism for Republican principles. Your assertion that the actions of others excuse Trump is positively not a conservaive principle- one is always responsible for one's own actions. If Obama, Trump and Biden 'put kids in cages' as you phrase it, each is separately responsible and none less guilty. You've heard of the Nuremburg Trials, yes?
