Most American voters consider themselves independents, casting their ballots for the best choice Republican of Democrat. I wouldn't call branch of the left-right spectrum 'extremists' except that those attempting to motivate their base will use extreme phrases, demonizing their political opponents.
The Democrats drive voters away with unsalable socialist proposals, ignoring American cultural disinclination to relying of others and/or naked Bernie Sanders socialism. History proves that that fails time after time, even with the worlds largest proven reserve of oil- Venezuela.
On the other hand, extreme rightist nationalism historically doesn't work, either. It fails economically, politically and culturally. Every market for everything evolves, changes an adapts over time- if it doesn't, it suffocates.
We need more political parties so that principles and ideas can invovle, motivat citizens to participate and vote. Personal example- I haven't admired, respected and hoped that a potential major party candidate success since Paul Rand and/or John McCain. Neither of which was, in the end, the person I expected.
We must not exclude the extremists! We must engage in dialogue, discover and apply what is useful in each political philosophy.
