We have a Tesla in the family  

Dollar for Dollar not a very practical car.  Worthless for a trip, spend way to much time charging or driving to a charging station, doesn't go the distance claimed and when it is cold out, range really drops off.  On a trup with any distance, you had better plan on a taking extra time off, if you are going to use the Tesla.

But nice car to drive, lots of power!  Just not worth the money for all the issues.

With the decreasing Availability of electricity and increasing cost of power, they Will not be that cheap to drive.  What will be real costly is when they have rolling power outages and you can't charge the car to go to work!
