Certain radicals on this forum suggested they knew better than the military and the balloon should have been shot down earlier.
Now we're finding that by allowing it to transit the nation, the Military and Intelligence community was actively following it with U2 Spy planes, doing their own surveillance on it, and were able to use a guided missile to puncture the balloon so as to not destroy the equipment on board.
As a result of the counter-intelligence, we have now found for sure that it wasn't a "weather balloon" as the Chinese lied about. They have uncovered a treasure trove of information as to what the Chinese were doing and how they were doing it.
We have shared this intel with multiple countries so they are aware of what the Chinese have been up to.
Had they blown it up immediately, they would have not been able to understand all the properties of this

This was a planned and concerted effort to gather a treasure trove of intel from how the Chinese are not only surveilling us, but others in the world.
