March 30, 2023 – The Lincoln Project releases the following statement on Donald Trump’s indictment in the Stormy Daniels case:
“Donald Trump is no victim. His indictment is the result of his criminal behavior. Trump gave money to a porn star to stay quiet about their affair to protect his campaign and covered it up. The grand jury found sufficient evidence to indict him. This indictment sends the first of many clear messages to the nation that the Rule of Law still has meaning.
“Trump’s lapdogs in Congress and the media are busy once again proving character no longer matters to the GOP as they rush forward to supplicate themselves to the GOP’s ‘Dear Leader’. The weak-minded Kevin McCarthy, wannabe-VP Elise Stefanik, and power-mad Ron DeSantis are more than happy to throw the Rule of Law under the bus.
“They will obstruct justice and blatantly lie for Trump to cover up his criminality so they can remain in good standing with the ultra-MAGA extremists who control the GOP and their political futures. For all their screeching about ‘weaponizing government,’ they’re doing just that by launching phony investigations in a pathetic attempt to obstruct this and other cases against Trump.
“Where are the laughably named ‘problem solvers’ and self-described moderates? They live in fear and hide behind their press staff, too afraid of primary challenges to do the right thing and say no one is above the law. They know even after this indictment, Trump is still the GOP frontrunner, and their fear keeps them compliant.
“The GOP once held up the Rule of Law as a pillar of conservative values, but that was before it ceased being a political party and transformed into Donald Trump’s personality cult. The biggest crime spree in the country isn’t in American cities; it’s inside Trump’s GOP.”
