"I didn't and won't talk politics with fellow Vietnam vets."
Are you a Vietnam vet?
My opinion is that most Vietnam vets were completely disillusioned by their experiences in the war. It was not 'our war' to fight, much less to win, so our efforts and those who fell in that stupid war were futile. Before you go there, I am not suggesting that the American military failed to fight gallantly and honorably! We were fighting and losing a futile war. For what? Colonialism versus independence even if formed by communists?
Yes, that war ended with a brutal repression. The war existed under brutal repression by both governments and all the agencies involved in the war.
The Vietnamese, on both sides, were determined to unite Vietnam. America was a welcome source of resources as far as they were concerned, but they knew that they would have to unite Vietnam.
America became involved because France was losing a colony to a well organised communist nationalist independence movement. The 'dominoes' (other South/Southeast Asian countries) would 'fall to communism' if Vietnam gained independence. That did happen and was happening during all the Indochina wars...
And we fecked the all Vietnamese denying South Vietnam promised resources.
Sidenote- Ho Chi Minh admired America, had lived and worked here. He approached us for support immediately after WW2- and was ignored. The Communists recognized the opportunity he presented and a long relationship with Ho.
Other than Ho Chi Minh's communism, America had no dog in that fight.
Me? I believe that mutual trade builds mutual wealth and mutual friendship. Help other peoples get rich and they will become Americanized. I have believed this long before I heard of The Economist's "Big Mac Index" and their position that no two countries with McDonald's franchises ever fought each other. |
