Michigan Senate GOP probe: No systemic fraud in election

Michigan Senate Republicans who investigated the state's presidential election say there was no widespread or systemic fraud

Trump and his allies have pushed debunked conspiracy theories and unfounded information about voter fraud.

“The committee strongly recommends citizens use a critical eye and ear toward those who have pushed demonstrably false theories for their own personal gain,” the panel wrote days after Republican activists requested an Arizona-style “forensic” audit of the election.

The committee's three Republicans did recommend legislation to close "real vulnerabilities" in future elections. Election-related bills are pending in the GOP-controlled Legislature, including proposed tougher photo ID rules that the Senate passed last week and the House amended and approved Wednesday. But Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will veto them if they reach her desk.

Election night results in northern Michigan's rural Antrim County, which has roughly 23,000 residents, initially erroneously showed a local victory for Biden over Trump. But it was attributed to human error, not any problems with machines, and corrected. A hand recount turned up no signs of shenanigans.

“We will review the report in its entirety in order to determine if a criminal investigation is appropriate,” Lynsey Mukomel, spokeswoman for Attorney General Dana Nessel, said of the call to probe individuals who have lied about what happened in Antrim.

People mentioned in the report include Mike Lindell, the MyPillow creator-turned-conspiracy peddler; lawyer Matthew DePerno, who unsuccessfully sued the county on behalf of a resident, and ex-state Sen. Patrick Colbeck. The report also criticized Texas-based Allied Security Operations Group, a company that worked with Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani to raise baseless allegations of fraud and counting errors.

The report dismissed various allegations — that many dead people voted, that hundreds of thousands of unsolicited absentee ballots were mailed to Michigan voters, that absentee ballots were counted multiple times, that tens of thousands of fraudulent absentee ballots were “dumped” at Detroit's counting center after the polls closed. Those ballots had been submitted throughout Election Day in drop boxes, in the mail and at clerk's offices.

The panel's Republicans recommended that drop boxes not be used or be closed sooner than 8 p.m. on election night so that processing and tabulating the ballots they contain do not extend long into the night. Democrats have said the move would disenfranchise some voters.

“The committee’s report goes into considerable detail ... and I hope the public is reassured by the security and protections already in place, motivated to support necessary reforms to make it better and grateful for our fellow citizens who do the hard work of conducting our elections,” said Sen. Ed McBroom, a Vulcan Republican who chairs the panel. Other recommendations include uniform signature-verification standards, the authorization of counting to begin before Election Day and the prohibition of unsolicited mailings of absentee ballot applications by the secretary of state.

The lone Democrat on the committee, Sen. Jeff Irwin of Ann Arbor, noted that its two other members had been among 11 GOP senators who asked Congress to investigate “credible” allegations of election misconduct on Jan. 4, two days before it met to certify Biden's win amid the deadly insurrection by Trump supporters at the Capitol.

“It is unfortunate that the Michigan Legislature participated in the circus, parading witnesses who were not credible or who pressed obvious falsehoods in order to promote the lie that Michigan’s results were tainted," he said. "But it is my fervent hope that we, as a legislative body, can finally focus our energy on getting help out to our residents who need it most after such a tumultuous year for many due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Where the libz lied about Trump lying, and it made nationwide fake news headlines...

Surprise! The media were wrong again. A recently published report from the Department of the Interior inspector general (IG) painted a different picture of a well-known event that took place in Lafayette Square last year. On June 1, 2020, amid protests and riots in the nation’s capital and across the country, then-President Donald Trump took what would soon become an iconic picture.

Trump left the White House on that day and headed toward Lafayette Square to St John’s Church. The Episcopal “church of presidents” had been vandalized and burned just the night before. Making an emotional statement, the President stood in front of the building and held a bible for a photo op. Keelin Ferris Outrage over his decision came after protesters were forcibly removed from the area.
The news media claimed Trump instructed the police to aggressively disperse the crowd, on short notice, for his photo-op. It turns out, that was not true.

What Really Happened

In fact, the decision to clear the square of protesters was made days before June 1 so that a contractor could erect anti-scale fencing. The U.S. Park Police (USPP) was given explicit instructions on when they needed to move demonstrators out of the park. The fence

installation was supposed to occur before 10 a.m. that day and Trump’s possible visit was scheduled to occur between 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

When 6 p.m. rolled around and the Park Police had still not carried out their orders, Attorney General William Barr asked the USPP commander if the protesters would be there when President Trump came out. As any professional law enforcement officer in charge would respond, he said: “Are you freaking kidding me?”  The commander and his force were aware of their instructions and of the president’s plans but failed to act.

Instead of carrying out the disbursement slowly, calmly, and efficiently, they procrastinated an additional eight hours and then rushed to remove the protesters. Unfortunately, the situation turned controversial and chaotic – though the Park Police was not the only agency at fault, the IG report found. The very large crowd of protesters was faced with tear gas and pepper balls.
USPP was the only law enforcement agency with  orders to respond to the situation. However, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) decided to show up, along with the Bureau of Prison Officers (BPO). Personnel from these agencies – and not the Park Police – fired off pepper balls and tear gas toward the demonstrators.

Report Conclusions

Contrary to media reports, then, the decision to clear the park was not made in order to provide Mr. Trump with a photo op. The investigation by the inspector general found that the police were acting well within their authority to break up the ongoing protest, even if they were late in doing so. Three warnings to disperse from the area had been given. Some protesters claim they did not hear these announcements, however. The inspector general’s bottom-line conclusion? The president’s visit to St John’s Church was unrelated to both the fence installation and the controversial clearance of protesters.

Trump’s Appreciation

Upon hearing the news, the former president released a statement thanking the Department of the Interior for exonerating him. He also criticized the fake news media, specifically CNN, for spreading misinformation. At the time CNN had claimed that “peaceful protesters near the White House were gassed, shot with rubber bullets so Trump can have a photo-op.”

Ve ry fake news. When the driveby media have this much disdain for the truth, they have equally as much disdain for the public, and as such are the ENEMY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, in quest of a...

old guy claimed "3 republicans on the committee, big deal!" Well; yes, it is a big deal. It was a committee of Republicans who investigated Trump's big lie in their state and found no basis- because it's just another Trump lie. But it's another sign of Trump's diminishing influence in the Republican Party. Trump ain't gonna like them.

The grinning idiot over Trump's left shoulder just had his NY law license suspended for lying about the election.

Report finds no evidence of dead voters or Detroit ballot dump that benefited Biden, and denounces baseless allegations

The Michigan report represents a stunning repudiation of the unsubstantiated claims made by the state’s pro-Trump activists and Trump himself.

 in Detroit, Michigan

An investigation into the Michigan election by state Republican lawmakers has concluded that there is no evidence of widespread fraud and dismissed the need for an Arizona-style forensic audit of the results.

The news comes amid a broad push by many Republicans – from Donald Trump to state parties – to push unfounded lies about Joe Biden’s victory, often promoting baseless conspiracy theories and evidence-free accusations of fraud.

The Michigan Republican report released on Wednesday followed 28 hours of legislative hearings starring local and national pro-Trump conspiracy theorists such as former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani. The report labeled many of their claims “ludicrous” and called on the state Democratic attorney general to open investigations into those who may have profited from making false claims.

The report was authored by the Republican-controlled senate oversight committee and it said it found no evidence of dead voters, no precincts with 100% turnout and no evidence of a Detroit ballot dump that benefited Biden, as GOP activists have claimed occurred.

“There is no evidence presented at this time to prove either significant acts of fraud or that an organized, wide-scale effort to commit fraudulent activity was perpetrated in order to subvert the will of Michigan voters,” the report reads.

“Citizens should be confident the results represent the true results of the ballots cast by the people of Michigan.”

The report represents a stunning repudiation of the unsubstantiated claims made by the state’s pro-Trump activists and Trump himself in their bid to overturn the critical battleground state’s results. Biden won Michigan by about 154,000 votes, or three percentage points. The tally was upheld by judges appointed by both parties in state and federal court, the bipartisan boards of state canvassers and reviews by election officials.

Still, Trump supporters have been applying intense pressure on state Republican officials to work to overturn the election results, and have censured or promised primary challenges for those who reject their far-fetched claims.

Trump had not responded to the report as of Wednesday afternoon, but in May issued a characteristic threat to his party when he said that Michigan’s senators “should be run out of office” if they haven’t reviewed “the Fraudulent Presidential Election of 2020”.

In the report, state senator Ed McBroom took aim at the pro-Trump activists who “who have pushed demonstrably false theories for their own personal gain”.

“If you are profiting by making false claims, that’s pretty much the definition of fraud,” McBroom said.

The office of Michigan’s attorney general, Dana Nessel, said on Wednesday that it’s still reviewing the report.

Despite that the report rebukes the conspiracy theories, the investigation found “glaring issues that must be addressed” in state election law, and the party is still pushing forward with a package of 39 controversial voting restrictions that it plans to ram through using a constitutional loophole that can bypass the veto of the Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer.

The Democratic state senator Jeff Irwin, who serves on the oversight committee, was the lone vote against the report. He noted that Michigan has paper ballots that confirm the results and praised Republican committee members for being “willing to stand and say that Michigan has free and fair elections”, but he added that the recommendations for new restrictions are unnecessary.

“They are responding to their GOP constituency more than they are offering good policy ideas,” he said.

Just how fraudulent the election was is still a huge issue in Michigan.  3 legislators with their findings did not convince anybody.  3 legislators with NO authority, asking questions would not have found anything.  Maybe just a talking point for libs, containing no real value.

On the 22nd Michigan lawmakers introduced a bil requiring a election audit?

it is SO OVER. The Michigan electors have cast their ballots, 16, unanymous for Biden/Harris. Anybody, everybody can piss and moan, throw tantrums, but the grown-ups have decided. Biden took the oath. Done.

Remember the January 6th riot? That was to stop the ballots being confirmed and accepted by Congress. It is done.

Trump will always be remembered as the president who not only didn't believe in elections, refused to accept his election loss but also incited a riot to attack the Capitol to prevent the election results being certified. Your Fearless, Inerrant Dear Leader.
