'Let's set an age limit!' Elon Musk suggests introducing a BAN on over 70s from running for office that would see Joe Biden and Donald Trump barred from seeking second term

  • Musk, who turned 50 in June, tweeted on Thursday that he wanted an age limit of 'just below 70' placed on those seeking political office
  • Joe Biden, now 79, is the oldest president in U.S. history and his critics - especially Fox News - frequently mock him for his age
  • Musk did not say who he meant, but he has frequently sparred with Bernie Sanders, with the 80-year-old Vermont senator calling for higher taxes
  • Twenty-three members of the Senate are in their 70s; only one is under 40, according to the Congressional Research Service
  • The average age of senators at the beginning of this year was 64.3 years — the oldest in history

It would be struck down in court after court. As it should be. What one loses with age- and there are losses, is offset with exposure, experience and, if you're smart: accurate analysis of issues.

The losses with age: many suffer diminished ability to quickly recall specifics; often there are many similar issues that one has been exposed to, so the ability to accurately analyze and categorize previous experiences becomes an issue in itself. And there is often some physical accuracy, coordination issues- not really a problem if you're management.

At one point in my flying career, I worked for a man who was late 70s but hale and hearty, could work me, an early-thirties guy physically into the ground, daily. Now, I was flying everyday teaching and he wasn't, but after a 13 hour day I'd be expended and he was till going strong.

His mentation and depth of experience was astounding. When we flew crew together, I was quicker and more accurate, but fractions of a second aren't always decisive- he might land harder out of an auto of whatever type but his analysis of the challenge and response, narrated, was always on the money. You don't build, maintain and fly for 40 years without learning something if you're trying to learn.

My question to you would be, why does it stand that a person must be at least 35 years of age to be POTUS? That right there proves that age limits can be applied to the job.

I'm an old dude, so I don't have anything against old people, and older people vary greatly. I know some people my age who seem like they are right on the edge of going to an elder care facility, while others myself included, don't think I'm anywhere near there yet.

I just think it would serve us better to have people a little younger in these positions. Yes, I know this will never happen in my lifetime...

There's an assumption with some data to back it that age correlates with maturity. Stautory rape with minors, drivers licenses, aging out of mandatory school attendance, age of contract, and even that last can be altered in court with emancipation.
