‘There was a coward and it wasn’t Mike Pence’: GOP Rep. Tom Rice becomes the first House Republican to say he REGRETS voting against certifying Biden's election win on January 6

  • Rice is in the unique position of having voted both against certifying Biden's win and for Trump's impeachment in the House
  •  The South Carolina lawmaker said he still believes there were 'real issues with the election'
  • 'In retrospect I should have voted to certify,' Rice said. 'Because President Trump was responsible for the attack on the Capitol'

GOP Rep. Tom Rice said Wednesday that he regrets his vote against certifying two state's electoral votes for President Biden as he now blames former President Trump for the Jan. 6 riot.

Rice is in the unique position of having voted both against certifying Biden's win and for Trump's impeachment in the House. Nine other Republicans voted for impeachment and 147 Republicans voted to overturn election results in Arizona and Pennsylvania, but no other vote overlapped.

The South Carolina lawmaker said he still believes there were 'real issues with the election.'

'In retrospect I should have voted to certify,' Rice told Politico. 'Because President Trump was responsible for the attack on the Capitol.'

'In the wee hours of that disgraceful night, while waiting for the Capitol of our great country to be secured, I knew I should vote to certify. But because I had made a public announcement of my intent to object, I did not want to go back on my word. So yeah, I regret my vote to object.'

Rice eviscerated the former president who he's often sought to tie himself with closely. He said that Trump watched 'with pride' from the safety of the White House as his supporters breached Capitol security and 'did nothing to stop it' despite pleas from friends and family to appear publicly and call off the riot.

Rice noted that five died in the chaos and hundreds of others were injured, as Vice President Mike Pence and his family were whisked away to safety.

'There was a coward in that equation,' Rice said. 'But it wasn't Mike Pence.'

But Rice has often touted his conservative voting record, voting with Trump 94 percent of the time, but soured on the former president in the days since the attack.

'He has not visited the injured and grieving. He has not offered condolences. Yesterday in a press briefing at the border, he said his comments were 'perfectly appropriate,'' he said at the time of his vote to impeach.

'I have backed this President through thick and thin for four years. I campaigned for him and voted for him twice. But, this utter failure is inexcusable.'

Rice also compared Trump to a dictator in a June interview.

'I have backed this President through thick and thin for four years. I campaigned for him and voted for him twice. But, this utter failure is inexcusable.'

More than 700 people have been charged in connection to the riot and 65 have been sentenced.

Still, Trump announced this week he will hold a news conference on the one-year anniversary of the riot. He still claims election fraud was to blame for his losses is in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan.

'Why isn't the [House] Unselect Committee of highly partisan political hacks investigating the CAUSE of the January 6th protest, which was the rigged Presidential Election of 2020?' Trump asked in an emailed statement. 'Does anybody notice that they want to stay as far away from that topic as possible, the numbers don't work for them, or even come close. The only thing they can do is not talk about it.'

'The insurrection took place on November 3rd, it was the complete unarmed protest of the rigged election that took place on January 6th,' Trump claimed.

I see people climbing walls. No doubt taken completely out of context. Maybe they were climbers practicing.

Doesn't make much sense when they could have easily walked up the stairs and into the capital because the police / security was holding the doors open and inviting evereyone in.

Does that appear to be odd to anyone?

If it was a stampede on the capitol, wouldn't it have been against protocol to invite everyone in????

Gee, but we won't get upset about the black cop shooting the white woman in the back that was posing no threat at all. I mean, it's not like she was carrying an RPG or any weapon for that matter.

This entire escapade has been completed overexaggerated and dramatized by our liberal counterparts.

OMG, THIS IS THE END OF DEMOCRACY....................OH, THE HORROR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was all part of the liberal playbook. Once again, the libs can never win on accomplishments and policies. They must claim victory through deceit and foul play.

You libs must be very proud. It has become your primary trait

Sure, they were climbers practicing just like Fields was "Just Running From Libs" when he murdered Heather in Charlottesville.

Obsy, you're delusional but this is what happens when you're in a cult, you can't see truth anymore...

Jett,

I wish you a very merry Christmas.

I've come to the conclusion that Old guy and Angry man are lost souls. I'm no longer going to engage with them. They don't seek truth.

With that, hope you're well!

The same logic is used against you when it comes to understanding what is happening in today's world.

Difference is you become unstable and start threatening people when it doesn't go your way. I would love to reach an understanding where we all have our own opinions. And apparently we all have our own set of truths and sources.

This is America my friend.

Merry Christmas to you and your family

Jetsheep,

In the Deep South, in one or more of those you call "Armpit States", people have a saying for what Rice is trying to do.

They call it "middlin' "

( middling) verb: An attempt to straddle the middle of a controversy in order to appease both sides. See "Sophistry," also "Double talk"

Rice is toast. We know Creepy Joe lost the election. The  BIG LIE is to reverse the facts. You idiots believe as a result Creepy Joe actually won

on NPR the weirdo leftist commentators wring their hands, breathlessly warning us about the "death of democracy" -- if somehow the RIGHT were to steal the election in 2024.

Steal. That's exactly what happened in 2020. And as always the left falsely blames the right for doing exactly what they themselves do.
Drmocracy has been a farce since.

You toolz know you can't get away with this twice.

Jan 6th?

You're just trying to spin the political bloodbath know you're gonna reap in 2024.

"Sympathy for the DEVIL?" (Aka the DNC)

No Quarter!

You can call it an "insurrection"  - I'll call Jan 6 a foolish symbolic attempt at a political "counter-insurgency"

Wait until the next election. The backlash is coming, you lying bastards won't be able to spin it, then or now.

in the meantime
I'll still call you leftist brainwashed toolz

"useful idiots!"

I spent some time looking at North Carolina news papers, not one word about this.

You would think a states news sources would report on this, but I could not find it, it either did not happen or it is not considered impotant news.

I think maybe because Mike Pence voted to impeach Trump, maybe people from his state now don't give a crap what he says!

Rice is from South Carolina not North Carolina, this piece is from the "The Post and Courier" which is the largest newspaper in South Carolina. The original post was from "Daily Mail" which is a far right wing news organization, see them on the chart?

SC’s Tom Rice reportedly regrets his vote objecting to the 2020 Electoral College results

MYRTLE BEACH — U.S. Rep. Tom Rice told Washington media he regrets objecting to the 2020 Electoral College results showing Democratic president-elect Joe Biden won Arizona and Pennsylvania.

“In retrospect I should have voted to certify,” the Myrtle Beach Republican told Politico on Dec. 22. “Because President Trump was responsible for the attack on the Capitol.”

Rice was one of 10 Republicans who voted in favor of impeaching then-President Donald Trump for failing to intervene when a mob of his supporters caused a riot on Capitol Hill to stop the certification of election results.

Of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, Rice was the only one who had objected to certifying the election results.

“In the wee hours of that disgraceful night, while waiting for the Capitol of our great country to be secured, I knew I should vote to certify,” Rice told Politico. “But because I had made a public announcement of my intent to object, I did not want to go back on my word. So yeah, I regret my vote to object.”

Rice declined to comment on Dec. 22 to The Post and Courier after publication of the Politico interview.

Backlash to Rice’s Trump impeachment vote was swift. The South Carolina GOP later censured him for his vote and didn’t invite him to the party’s state conference that was held in his own district in Myrtle Beach this past October.

S.C. GOP Chairman Drew McKissick declined to comment on Rice’s new statement about his vote. Leaders of the Horry County GOP did not respond to emails asking for their reaction to the congressman’s latest comments.
Rice presently faces 10 challengers heading toward the 2022 GOP primary for his 7th Congressional District seat, which includes parts of Florence, the Pee Dee, Myrtle Beach and the northeastern part of the state.

Trump has already signaled he wants to replace Rice, issuing a statement last month calling on additional “good and SMART America First Republican Patriots” to take on the Myrtle Beach congressman.

Rice voted with Trump 94 percent of the time over the past four years, according to FiveThirtyEight. But his vote to impeach Trump was deemed counter to what some of the loudest voices in the Republican base value most: an enduring loyalty to the former president.

The only South Carolina Republican who voted to certify the 2020 election results was U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace of Charleston. Despite comments she made criticizing Trump on Jan. 6, she did not vote to impeach the president.

I don't know anything about Rice, but in general what you just said and it's probably true that any politician who doesn't acknowledge trump as supreme leader with complete loyalty is finished? I know a number of conservative Republicans who don't care for trump but they are still conservative Republicans.

Can't anyone have a different opinion? Are you guys that hard core that it's either trump or you're finished? That sure as hell doesn't seem like freedom to be an American with choices to me.

I certainly don't think the Founding Fathers ever intended it to be that way...

We should vote for people with some reasonable amount of intelligence, Rice voted to impeach Trump, that shows the total lack of intelligence.  Should not get anybody's votes.

A different opinion should be based on something, not stupidity.

You are like the guy who said "I'd feather push a Chevy that drive a Ford". How stupid!

Look at you, you voted on your emotions, you voted against Trump, for Biden without caring about one thing he stood for.  You have posted you didn't care.  I do not consider any mature intelligent human would do that.

I wasn't talking about the Rice situation specifically, I was talking about the concept generally. Can a conservative Republican serve their country if they don't happen to care for trump?

While your answer was from the Rice angle, it was still alarming to me...

You have said on many occasions that you would vote for a stone rather than vote republican.

WHich makes it clear, you do not care what the dem stands for and will do.

Which is exactly what old guy just told you.

What's alarming to me is how you can accuse others of exactly what you, yourself do.

No wonder you and ballslap get along so well. Even crofraud is backing away from you two.

Just an observation

A true conservative could dislike Trump, but not his policies.

If a person stood for free enterprise. Private ownership, and socially traditional ideas how could ne not like Trump.

It is policies, that make a difference, those policies make a conservative not emotional BS!

Example----- it is plain as day that Trump did not did not have any thing to do with the protesters entering the capital.  In his speech he said to go forward pleacefully, never did he direct any one to enter The capital or cause violence, never.  Now for someone to think Trump did it, they are not thinking out of common sense, they are using emotions from hating Trump.
