Many LEFTISTs would like to distance themselves from Foucault. The truth is, Many Leftists, and Neocons ( like you and Liz Cheney) would find themselves in agreement with this guy.

The common thread is Freidrich Nietzsche 

The common consequence is posrmodernism.

Nietzche influenced Foucaults preoccupation with a critique and analysis of political power structures. Nietzsches "will you power" and conception of the individual who "overcomes himself" (ubermench) has appealed to both ex ends of the political spectrum. 

Postmodernism is post "modernism" where, during Nietzches time people thought the world and mankind could  advance and be saved through the progress  of science, education, finance, and centralized government.

That idea didn't turn out so well. With each advance also came the empowering of human evil. No one knew how to put the "modernist" genie back in the bottle 

So, dispensing with such lofty goals, postmodernists like Foucault turned his focus on the individual, snd  individual freedom, a response to what appears to be the failures of the "modern" collectivists.

His "Existentialism" was a despairing turn to the subject, because I think he realized the modern conceptions of social progress has failed, or are still generally failing against the evils attendant with modernist "progress" 

"Sexual liberation" was among the interests of the Left during the 1960-1970s .. fueled by postmodern thinkers and college professors ( Eric From- "Eros in Civilization" for example) The gay rights movement was organized by political subversives on the left ( Harry Hay, CPUSA member, whose secretive organization "The Mattachine society" used aliaises and patterned itself after the tradecraft employed by the Soviet backed CPUSA) 

It appears Foucault had the particular disposition to die the way he did. Lacking essential meaning he embraced the 'exestiential' truths he sought in the exaggerated contrast of "pain vs bliss", acted out in the  perverted sadomasochistic world of the 70s gay bathhouses, where homosexuals reputedly engaged with hundreds and up to a thousand anonymous sex partners in a year. (!) 

Those numbers were discovered when AIDS researchers originally studied the behaviors of those that spread it. Foucault denied those facts, and was one of the "spreaders"-- the way he chose to act out his own nietzschesn "will you power"

Like Frederich Nietzsche, who died at the age of 54 from the terminal effects of tertiary syphilis, Venerial diseases were now a permanent part of the new POST modern world- where SCIENCE ( Fauci-"I am science" ) had no cure for human immoral excesses, and where technology and politics too often became the tool of would-be money-making tyrants.
