Trump not running in 2024, but he wants to make you think he is  

Trump is not running in 2024. A defeat would end his political power. His low 40s favorability polls mean that it would be unlikely that he could beat any Democratic candidate in 2024. His candidacy got Biden elected. Many Biden voters weren't voting for Joe, they were voting against Trump.

But he is still politically powerful in the body f/k/a "The Republican Party". Trump has made no secret that he wants to influence if not control the upcoming Republican Primaries. His endorsement will be powerful but actual campaign funds he can dispense will be even more powerful. He can not convert campaign contributions to his own personal benefit (well, he did misappropriate Trump Foundation funds...) but he can contribute those campaign contributions to candidates he favors- even more control of the process, the party at no expense to himself. He won't lose the elections, his candidates could. And those that win will be beholden to him.

So, he presents plausible deniability and collects contributions for his presidential campaign... that will never happen. The potential primary candidates see this, and many will strike deals with Trump.

But Trump's ascent is over, his energy spent except for the potential energy of his fall. A sooft landing is still possible, Trump has dodged many bullets over his career. But his legal issues are multiplying....

Yeah, The Donald's election was a reaction to the then current political process. Message recieved. However, it was garbled in transmission- the Republican Party reduced it's conservatism and became Reactionary Trumpist. The Democrats almost, almost succumbed to increased socialism. In averting that, the best candidate they had was a long-time centrist and deal maker- Joe Biden. The Democratic Left is still trying to get the bit between their teeth to run away- that's gonna cost the Democrats in 2022.
