McCarthy's campaign appeared to be in some question going into Friday after he haemorrhaged support throughout the first three days of voting and failed to win over the support of even one member who voted against him. But all changed on the twelfth ballot, which was cast on a Friday afternoon, when 14 doubters shifted their votes to McCarthy. On the ensuing ballot, Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) changed his vote, making him the fifteenth. After McCarthy conceded to many important demands from his opposition, including a "motion to vacate" that makes it simpler for a speaker to be replaced mid-term, many people who had previously altered their votes did so for this reason.
